Besides being a monk (sunim) and the abbot of Muddy Water Zen, he also ‘wears the hats’ of father and veterinarian. Previously on the path to ordination as a Presbyterian minister, in 1997 he received the precepts (formally became Buddhist) from Ven. Samu Sunim of the Buddhist Society for Compassionate Wisdom. Later he became a Dharma student of P’arang Geri Larkin of Still Point Zen Buddhist Temple (Detroit) where he was ordained a Dharma teacher in May 2003.Muddy Water Zen was established in November 2003. In November 2007, Hae Doh (formerly Kogam) was re-ordained a monk in the Korean Buddhist Taego Order by Ven. Dr. Jongmae Park, Patriarch of the Overseas Parish of the Taego Order.
Rev. Bup Seong (formerly Chin Bool) took precepts at Muddy Water Zen in April of 2009 and later ordained Bup Sanim (Dharma Instructor) in April 2012. Bup Seong is the first female disciple of Ven. Hae Doh. Bup Seong recently graduated from Oakland University with a B.A in English and a minor in Sociology. In addition to her responsibilities as a Dharma Instructor, Bup Seong also serves as the Events Coordinator for Muddy Water Zen.
Bup Heng took precepts at Muddy Water Zen in April 2011 and was ordained a Dharma Teacher in April 2013. He has studied at Oakland University, receiving a B.A. in philosophy, and is currently studying horticulture while working in the green industry.
Bup Il (Greg Sherburn) took precepts at Muddy Water Zen Temple in April 2011 and was ordained a Dharma Instructor in July 2014. He has worked in the medical device industry for over 40 years and holds a BA and MA from Michigan State University. He and his wife of 36 years (Dena K. Mackie-Sherburn) reside in Bloomfield, MI and they have three grown children.
Rev. Bup Tcheon formally took precepts at Muddy Water Zen in 2012 and received ordination as a Dharma Instructor (Bupsanim) in 2015. He has been involved in alternative and traditional healthcare practice since 1988. Bup Tcheon received his DC from Life Chiropractic College West and a BSN from Oakland University. He now works as a Certified Critical Care Registered Nurse. He enjoys playing and composing music for the guitar and being a father to his son, a professional musician.
Bup Woo was ordained in Korea in 2012. He currently resides in Birmingham, MI and teaches at Muddy Water Zen. He will travel to Korea again in 2020 for full Bhikhu ordination.
